Why no free tier?
Free tiers train users to expect zero cost and attract noise rather than the right customers. Fieldnote is a serious tool for serious work — we'd rather charge transparently than monetise the inattentive.
Can I try before I buy?
Yes. Sign up creates a demo workspace seeded with sample data. You can build a real instrument, run the PWA, fire off a public link, and ask Margin a few questions. When you're convinced, you pick a plan.
Where is my data stored?
By default, Fieldnote-hosted on Hetzner Cloud, Germany. Encrypted at rest, HTTPS in transit. On the Sovereign plan, you provide a Postgres + PostGIS database in any jurisdiction; Fieldnote writes through to it — your data stays in your servers.
What happens to my data if I cancel?
You can export the full project archive (instrument, responses, media, audit log) at any time. After cancellation, we retain your data for 30 days during which you can re-activate; after that it's permanently deleted.
How is Margin charged?
Per plan, Margin includes a daily request quota (see the table). Above the quota, you can buy additional credits or upgrade. Margin uses Gemini 3.5 Flash, the fast model from Google — typical latency is a few seconds.
Can I switch plans later?
Yes, anytime, with prorated billing. Up-tier takes effect immediately; down-tier takes effect at the next billing cycle.
Does Fieldnote work for sensitive PII?
Yes — with the right plan. The Team plan includes per-project PII flags and consent tracking. The Sovereign plan adds field-level encryption, custom retention, and BYO-DB so the data physically lives where your IRB requires.
Do you do invoicing in Naira?
Yes. Nigerian customers can pay in Naira via Paystack; institutional buyers get NGN-invoiced via Data Druid Tech Services Limited.
