What Fieldnote collects
Account data: your name, email address and password hash. Workspace data: the projects, instruments, responses, photos and audio your team collects. Operational data: an append-only activity log of state changes (who published an instrument, who sent invitations, when a response arrived) kept for accountability.
Respondent data
Responses collected through Fieldnote — including any personally identifying information your instruments capture — belong to the workspace that collected them. Fieldnote processes this data only to provide the service: storage, sync, exports, and the AI analysis your team explicitly requests. Projects can be flagged as capturing PII so the whole team knows to handle them with care.
What we never do
- We never sell your data, or your respondents' data, to anyone.
- We never use your research data to train AI models.
- We never show ads.
AI processing
When your team asks Margin a question, the relevant responses are sent to Google's Gemini API to generate the answer, and every request is logged in your workspace's activity record. Margin can be left unused — no response is sent to an AI provider unless someone on your team asks for analysis.
Storage and retention
Data is hosted with Hetzner in Germany and served over HTTPS, with routine backups. If you cancel, your data is retained for 30 days so you can re-activate, then permanently deleted. You can export everything as CSV or JSON at any time before or during that window.
